10 reasons to stay in the Fortified Town of Campeche, historic key spot of the Yucatan Peninsula.

1.-This UNESCO World Heritage- listed historic center is guarded by an original system of fortifications that was used to defend Campeche from constant pirate attacks.

2.-Its bastions have been well preserved. One can even penetrate the structure and climb to see a wonderful ocean view and appreciate the outlining of the fortress.

3.-.-It is an important instance of military Caribbean architecture and an awesome way to travel through time to the Spanish colonial period of the New World.

4.-.-The colorful harbor town, conquered and founded by the Spanish in the 16th century, was originally a Mayan region that has preserved its roots and cultural legacy, until our present times.

5.-Campeche was a key site in the process of evangelization and colonization of the Yucatan Peninsula. It also played an essential role in the maritime route of the Spanish Colony, along with the ports of Havana and Veracruz.

6.-Campeche is rich in Mayan and Colonial history, but also in stories and anecdotes from the times of the pirate invasions, since it was one of the wealthiest cities of New Spain.

7.-The city has many interesting archaeology, art and history museums that are worth visiting: the San José Fort Underwater Archeology Museum, the Baluarte de la Soledad Mayan Architecture Museum (where you can see the jade mask of Calakmul); the Fuerte de San Miguel Archaeological Museum, the Baluarte de San Carlos City Museum, the Campeche Library, or the El Palacio Museum.

8.-The hexagonal wall has two important gates: Puerta de Mar, or Sea Gate, the first maritime access to the city, completed in 1710; and Puerta de Tierra, or Land Gate, formerly used to enter the fortified town, where visitors can watch an illumination show that displays the history of Campeche.

9.-The historic monuments and fortifications have suffered very few transformations, and have been restored according to original procedures, resulting in a place of true architectural value, with a very authentic feel.

10.-The fortified town allows us to hear the voices of its ancestors, thanks to the continued traditions, cultural heritage, authentic pueblo life and living Mayan legacy.
